Abbreviated text version:
“Australia’s unsung hero is GSM, simply, because we buy so much varietal wine. What I’ve got for you today is a great wine to drink straight away to get the full effect of the Grenache ripeness, the Shiraz Tannins and Mataro finish. You get a bold, ripe, soft and ready to drink red wine that’s got heaps of flavour. When you smell this little baby, its raspberry, blackberry and a little bit of pepper spice coming through. The Grenache and the Shiraz had such a happy year in 2008 that that’s what you really get with some bottle maturity as well.
The pallet is heralded by Grenache sweet fruit, the Shiraz tannins to build to give it some firmness in the middle, and the Mataro gives it that drying finish for right now. This is a medium to full bodied wine, not too soft but not too dry either. I would serve this wine now with anything rich and creamy. Wines That Make Me Thirsty, cheers”
The appearance is deep and brooding with a vibrant burgundy red colour and long legs coating the glass.
The bouquet is intense with sweet spicy berry fruit followed by brandy soaked raisins and rich fine grained oak. It’s harmoniously integrated with hints of chocolate, earthy spices and licorice. Premium oak is obvious but nicely restrained.
On the palate this wine is a journey from the freshness of a country farmers market with ripe strawberries, mulberries, spices and confection through a gourmet deli with smoked meats, savoury olive tapenades and freshly roasted coffee to a rustic county kitchen with hearty baked sweet pies, fruitcake and pudding. It’s a complex array of sensations and flavours with generous mouth-feel and a long, smooth finish.
This wine is a gentle giant, warm and friendly with a big robust heart and powerful structure. It makes a great match to prime Angus steak, slow roasted lamb and savoury beef casseroles, without dominating the flavour. It has finesse and balance which brings out the best across a range of cuisine styles. The finish is smooth and dry, making it ideal with a selection of soft creamy cheeses as well as firm vintage styles.
This wine has an impressive pedigree and its gentle maturation over the last 4 years prior to bottling have retained a degree of freshness which mean it will continue to enjoy many more years of graceful aging in bottle. This wine has all the elements that will allow it to reward careful cellaring for well over 5 to 7 years. We recommend decanting to drink now.
