Bottled in May 2013 following many years barrel and tank aging, this second limited release Epiphany is a continuing insight into the complexity of Barossa Shiraz from Peter Jorgensen. It showcases hand crafted excellence from premium vineyards skillfully blended from the very best fruit. A full flavoured softer tannin wine than the 2006 Epiphany, we consider this wine an inspiration and among the best wines we have ever produced! Internal winery ranking 19/20.
YouTube Review by Robert Geddes, Master of Wines, June 2013
The colour is rich deep ruby red with intense mahogany and violet hues. It is dense and inky with long alcohol “legs” coating the glass.
The bouquet is powerfully intense with dark fleshy fruit, smoky bacon and a rich earthy background. The alcohol spirit is heady with polished mahogany and cedar wood. It has subtle spice and oak balanced harmoniously with the earthy elements and the complexity of old dry grown vines.
The pedigree and sophistication of this Shiraz is immediately obvious on entry. It shows medicinal herbs and dry spice supporting ripe berry fruit, oak and robust tannins. Palate weight is powerful yet restrained. The sensuous alcohol lifts the berry fruit and the powdery dry tannins reveal a clean earthy mid palate with spice, pepper and dark chocolate. The finish is dry and lingering with a profusion of flavours lasting well after the first sip.
A wine like this is an experience on its own. It will be at home with the finest of cuisine or simply pour a generous serve into a tall, wide bowled glass, allow it to breathe for 20 minutes and indulge in an organoleptic feast for the senses. It will be perfect with a tender rare steak, flame grilled with a rich garlic butter sauce.
This is a big powerful wine with enormous aging potential. It’s had an excellent oak regime and careful cellar maturation before release. It will continue to develop in bottle for decades. Wines of this caliber will grow in complexity and be used to celebrate great occasions for many years. A very well made wine from premium Barossa vineyards. Please allow this wine to breathe for a good hour prior to consuming.
This wine will remain in ‘bottle shock’ until mid August 2013. We recommend cellaring for 3 months before consuming. Decant before consuming.
