Show Reserve Epiphany provides genuine insight into the complexity of great Barossa Shiraz from winemaker Peter Jorgensen. 2017 is no exception, probably the best since the fabled 2006, showcasing hand crafted excellence from premium vineyards, skillfully blended from the very best barrels and reflecting both the elegance and sophistication of the vintage. If it is possible to refer to a wine as beautiful, this is it.
Region: Barossa | State: SA | Country: Australia
Deep brooding red with intense ruby hues, an earthy garnet rim and long alcohol “legs” coating the glass.
Bouquet is textbook Barossa. Powerfully intense with lifted alcohol spirit carrying aromas of blueberry, violets and raspberry confection. As the layers unfold, the deeper, more complex characters appear; earthy herbs, toasted oak and bake house bread. With further breathing notes of cedar wood, nutmeg, star aniseed and ground coffee are evident.
The pedigree and sophistication of this Shiraz is immediately obvious. The fruit, oak and tannins are powerful yet restrained. The palate weight grows as sensuous alcohol lifts the berry fruit and the powdery dry tannins reveal a clean earthy mid palate with spice, pepper and dark chocolate. The finish is dry and lingering with a profusion of flavours lasting well after the first sip. The addition of cool climate fruit from the high Barossa ranges adds tension and elegance to the earthy, rich flavours of the valley floor.
It is easy for a wine of this intensity to dominate the flavour spectrum of many food pairings. A dry aged steak with a rich gravy reduction and truffle infused, creamy mashed potatoes would be magic. Or try a serving of vintage cheddar on crispy lavosh. This is a serious wine fit for grand occasions.
This is a powerful wine with significant aging potential and a fine example of a handcrafted winemaking at its best. With careful cellar maturation it will continue to develop in bottle for well over a decade. A wine with this complexity will be opened to celebrate many occasions for years to come.
The “Epiphany” label is reserved for premium wines produced in seasons that display particular fruit qualities prior to harvest. At the core of all Epiphany Shiraz is premium vineyard management and minimal intervention winemaking. The resulting wines are limited quantity batches of natural wines with minimal filtration or additives. They are wines that take time to evolve and allow all elements to become integrated. The aging process will continue in bottle and this Shiraz will develop a light crust over time. Please allow this wine to breathe for 30 minutes or so prior to consuming.
